News & Announcements

The Foundation of the Bar Association of the District of Columbia Is Now Accepting Grant Applications
The Foundation of the Bar Association of the District of Columbia (FBADC) is pleased to announce application guidelines for its 2015 grant making cycle. The mission of the FBADC is to support nonprofits that serve the legal and related needs of citizens of the District of Columbia. The deadline is May 31, 2015.

Nominations are open for the Eighteenth Annual Constance L. Belfiore Quality of Life Award.

Achieving quality of life, particularly in these complicated economic times, is even more vital to the legal profession and the lawyer.  Employers who provide quality of life for their lawyers should be recognized and nominated.  Relatively new efforts, including how employers handle down-sizing, fee changes, and promotions may, or may not, apply.  Lawyers who achieve quality of life are urged to nominate their employers for the Award.

Nominees have found the application process to be enlightening and rewarding.  Award winners have been exceptionally pleased with the Award’s effect on morale, recruitment, retention, and client satisfaction.

Whether still adjusting to the changing economy or not, legal employers who factor quality of life values into their decisions should be nominated.  The deadline for receipt of applications is Friday, May 8, 2015.

This year’s winner will be honored during the BADC Annual Meeting in June and on the BADC website.  Applications are available here. You can also contact us at info@badc.org or 202-223-6600 to request a copy to be faxed or mailed to you.

Please thank your veterans and service members for their service.

A few ways you can support your service members and veterans are listed below.

  • Claims Assistance Network (VCAN): ABA VCAN is a pilot program in partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that provides pro bono volunteer opportunities for lawyers to help veterans with the preparation and completion of claims for disability compensation benefits currently pending with VA. Attorneys can sign up and view VCAN’s free training webinar on www.ABAVCAN.org.

  • ABA Home Front: ABA Home Front is an online resource, on www.ABAHomeFront.org, designed to help military members, veterans, and their families find legal information, referrals, and representation for civil legal matters. They may use the (1) the Directory of Programs to find a state-by-state guide of legal resources available in their area, and (2) the Information Center for information about their legal rights and responsibilities.

  • VSO Search Page: Veterans can appoint a VA-recognized Veterans Service Organization (VSO) that will help them for free throughout the entire benefits claims process with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Visit: http://www.ebenefits.va.gov, click on “View all Features,” and then “Find or View Your Representative for VA Claims” to find and select a local representative.

If have questions or if you  sign up please email or call Bill Aramony with the Military Law Committee (MLC) billaramony@gmail.com. Please use subject line BADC Vets or via phone at 703-299-8496.
