The Bar Association of the District of Columbia’s Quality of Life Committee has selected two legal employers to receive the 17th Annual Constance L. Belfiore Quality of Life Award.

As a large government agency, the Trademark Organization of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office took a bold and experimental step in 1997 to offer telework and flexible work schedules, save office and energy costs, and increase efficiency.  The initiatives succeeded, and at present, 98% of the more than 500 lawyers take advantage of teleworking and flexible scheduling.  They also benefit from advanced communication technologies and strategies, career development programs, and exceptional work-life balance benefits.  As a result, the attrition rate for attorneys who telework is less than 1%.

A small private law firm, Roth Doner Jackson, PLC, was founded on the need for a healthy work-life balance.  It embraces flexible and alternative work schedules, requires no minimum billable hours, nurtures young associates and paralegals, and throughout ensures collegiality and time for family and outside interests.  Its policies and practice impress clients, as well as its own lawyers and their families.

The quality of life experienced by lawyers at these two very different places can and should be emulated by others.  The Committee thus decided to give an award to both legal employers.

This year’s winner will be honored during the BADC Annual Meeting on Friday, June 13 at the Mayflower Hotel.
The BADC is proud to announce the release of Issue III of the New Millennium Edition of the Journal of the Bar Association of the District of Columbia.  This issue is available for download here.
