The Bar Association of the District of Columbia to Honor Solicitor General Donald B. Verrilli, Jr. as Lawer of the Year and Magistrate Judge John M. Facciola as Judicial Honoree at 143rd Annual Banquet

Christopher A. Zampogna, President of the Bar Association of the District of Columbia (BADC), today announced that Solicitor General Donald B. Verrilli, Jr., who has argued countless cases before the Supreme Court, has been named its 2014 “Lawyer of the Year” and the Honorable John M. Facciola, retiring Magistrate Judge from the District of Columbia Federal District Court, will receive the 2014 “Judicial Honoree” Award.

The awards will be presented at the BADC’s 143rd Annual Banquet sponsored by the Foundation of the BADC, at the Willard Hotel, 1401 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Saturday, December 6, 2014.

The BADC’s “Lawyer of the Year” award was established in 1950 to honor a member of the legal profession who has distinguished him or herself in the practice of law in terms of intellectual excellence, uncompromising integrity and the advancement of access to justice for those outside the legal profession.  Solicitor General Verrilli was the enthusiastic and unanimous choice for 2014.  Mr. Verrilli previously served as Deputy Counsel to President Obama and as an Associate Deputy Attorney General in the U.S. Department of Justice.

Prior to his government service, he was a partner for many years at Jenner & Block, and co-chaired the firm’s Supreme Court practice.  Mr. Verrilli maintained an active pro bono practice throughout his career in private practice, and received several awards for his efforts.  He also taught First Amendment law as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law School from 1992 through 2008.  Mr. Verrilli received his undergraduate degree from Yale University and his J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Columbia Law Review.  He served as a law clerk to the Honorable J. Skelly Wright of the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and to the Honorable William J. Brennan, Jr. of the United States Supreme Court.  For all his past, current, and future accomplishments, the BADC is proud to bestow on him the title of “Lawyer of the Year.”

The BADC’s “Judicial Honoree” award is bestowed upon a member of the judiciary who has distinguished him or herself in the administration of Justice in the District of Columbia.  Magistrate Judge John M. Facciola has been a figure in the DC legal community since the early 70’s.  He was appointed a United States Magistrate Judge in the District of Columbia in 1997. Prior to being appointed to the bench, he served as an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan from 1969-1973, and was in private practice in the District of Columbia from 1974-1982.  Judge Facciola joined the U.S. Attorney's Office in 1982 and served as Chief of the Special Proceedings section from 1989 until his appointment as Magistrate Judge.

Judge Facciola is a frequent lecturer and speaker on the topic of electronic discovery.  He is a member of the Sedona Conference Advisory Board, the Georgetown Advanced E-Discovery Institute Advisory Board and he is also the former Editor-in-Chief of The Federal Courts Law Review, the electronic law journal of the Federal Magistrate Judges Association.  He was recently appointed to the Board of Directors of the Federal Judicial Center.  His most recent publication is with Jonathan M. Redgrave, Asserting and Challenging Privilege Claims in Modern Litigataion:  The Facciola-Redgrave Framework, 2009 Fed. Cts. L. Rev. 19 (2009).  He received his A.B from the College of the Holy Cross and his J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center.  For Judge Facciola’s demanding standards, demonstrated excellence in the administration of justice, and manifold support for causes that provide and expand legal services and representation to our community, the BADC is honored to bestow on him its “Judicial Honoree” award.

A few ways you can support your service members and veterans are listed below.

  • Claims Assistance Network (VCAN): ABA VCAN is a pilot program in partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that provides pro bono volunteer opportunities for lawyers to help veterans with the preparation and completion of claims for disability compensation benefits currently pending with VA. Attorneys can sign up and view VCAN’s free training webinar on www.ABAVCAN.org.

  • ABA Home Front: ABA Home Front is an online resource, on www.ABAHomeFront.org, designed to help military members, veterans, and their families find legal information, referrals, and representation for civil legal matters.
