That Treat Their People Well
Achieving quality of life, particularly in these difficult economic times, is even more vital to the legal profession and the lawyer. Employers who provide quality of life for their lawyers should be recognized and nominated. New efforts, including how employers handle down-sizing, fee changes, and promotions may, or may not, apply. Lawyers who continue to achieve quality of life are urged to nominate their employers for the Award.
Nominees have found the application process to be enlightening and rewarding. Award winners have been exceptionally pleased with the Award’s effect on morale, recruitment, retention, and client satisfaction.
The Bar Association of the District of Columbia’s Quality of Life Committee has selected the Office of the General Counsel, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to receive the 18th Annual Constance L. Belfiore Quality of Life Award.
USAID has an outstanding reputation not only for the quality of work performed, but also for the quality of life reported. USAID lawyers love their work, and are highly effective at advancing USAID’s mission of partnering to end extreme poverty and promote resilient, democratic societies worldwide. They also consistently rate their office as a “best place to work”, praising the dedication, support, and friendliness of co-workers and supervisors, international travel opportunities to support USAID’s Resident Legal Officers at overseas posts, very family-friendly policies and practices, and fun social and sporting events.
The Office prioritizes families, promotes personal life balance, and aims to allow staff to choose a schedule that works best for themselves and their families. Many lawyers and other staff members participate in alternative work schedules that can include: regular reoccurring telework days; call-in telework days (for unexpected issues), nine hour work days with one day off every week or two, and the opportunity to decrease hours to part time.
The quality of life experienced by lawyers and staff in this office is exceptional; it can and should be emulated by others. The Committee thus decided unanimously to give the award to the Office of General Counsel, USAID.
The award will be given at the BADC's Annual Luncheon, in the Mayflower Hotel, on Friday, June 19, 2015. All are welcome. Reservations may be made here.
